The Office for Economic & Community Development at Humboldt State University will present “The New World Order and the Future of Recovered Paper” in its Taking Care of Business Workshop Series on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the new Samoa Recycling Facility. Pete Grogan, market development manager for Weyerhauser, will discuss the impact on paper demand and paper recovery of the three billion new capitalists in historically socialist nations in Asia and Europe who are dramatically increasing global consumption of natural resources and recyclable commodities. Global paper consumption is estimated to grow 50% by 2015—only eight years hence. Grogan will outline how Redwood Coast businesses can find opportunities in the worldwide future of recycled paper. The workshop will coincide with the Arcata Community Recycling Center’s Open House for the new Samoa Recycling Facility. Attendees will tour Humboldt County’s first privately-owned LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building, take a behind-the-scenes look at the new dual-stream recycling process and view interactive education displays on waste reduction. The recycling center visits K-12 classrooms across Humboldt County to teach the four R’s—reduce, reuse, recycle and rot (compost). The new facility can be reached via Samoa Boulevard (Route 255) south to Samoa. Proceed through the controlled intersection and on to the peninsula, which becomes New Navy Base Road. Take the second left before the pulp mill onto TCF Lane. At the T-intersection, turn left on Vance Avenue. Details at www.humboldt.edu/econdev/nwo.

HSU Expands Wireless Service
Immediate
Humboldt State University has rolled out an extensive wireless network that greatly expands service to the campus through a combination of donated access points from San Jose State University and local resources.
With the expansion, the number of installed and operational wireless devices has jumped to 66 from 28. Ultimately, some 100 devices will be installed campus-wide, according to Rick Garcia, HSU’s Manager of Telecommunications and Network Services.
Owing to construction materials and building configurations, not every area of each building is completely covered, but every attempt was made to make the expanded system a broad and usable network, according to Josh Callahan, Interim Director of HSU’s Central IT Systems and Services.
The California State University system is enlarging wireless access on all 23 campuses as part of the Infrastructure Terminal Resources Project, with an upgrade scheduled at Humboldt State for late 2008.
“As resources are available, HSU Information Technology Services will try to revisit high-use areas that are found to have weak coverage” in the system, Callahan said.
It uses Bradford’s Campus Manager product to control access. “Currently, the system is set up just to authenticate users, but in 2008 we are planning to ramp up the security checking to look for current operating system patches and anti-virus software,” Callahan added. “This will help manage the ongoing problem that all university networks face of users bringing computers onto campus that have been infected with viruses. A phased approach was chosen for the security, so we could do additional communication with users as to what to expect.”
